The Lincolnesque Crank

So Newt the Lizard of Ooze wants a “Lincoln – Douglas” style debate with Barack Obama. Am I to assume that this lizard is the “Lincoln” of the debate? For a man who makes us have to reinvestigate all of the possibilities of what “dishonesty” might actually involve in a human character, to find hidden “dishonesties” that have only surfaced when considering this specific example of the species, unknown to any previous anthropology of the post-Garden era? Probably the most rapidly available adjective that comes to mind when considering the Great Liberator is “Honest.” Now the Lizard loves being called “smart,” intelligent, some even refer to him as the “intellectual” of the Party (ponder, ye of surplus cerebra and time to waste the implication of this Orwellian semiotic), and, like all other cranks, being called “smart” is the only desideratum on which self-esteem relies. Call me “smart” and I am happy – I’ve made the only point I need to make, that I am smart. Pull me down, point out the irreality and delusive nature of my ideas, note in minute detail that I lie through my teeth, my bladder, my scrotum, but flatter me with my smartness, call me SMART and I have made the only point I need to make. Call me SMART and the only relevant point has been made; case closed. And the Republican Party Intellectual? Now that’s a small space to fill. Too easy. Lincoln had the wrong idea: people were much more likely to praise his integrity, his honesty, his moral depth, but they actually thought he was pretty dumb. SMART wasn’t the adjective of Lincoln, HONEST was. The grandiose crank craves only the barrage of SMART; Newt loves the label “grandiose” (he actually embraced it with pride in a rejoinder): he apparently believes it is a synonym for Grand; not very good for someone so SMART as he. It is a synonym for delusional and pathological self-image. So to embrace it is not very SMART, since your inferiors understand the definition better than you. Narcissism, enslavement to self, unverifiable claims – this is the world of the crank. Newt had some accomplishments, however they were brought about, but Ph.D. notwithstanding, he has no claim on wisdom, persuasive power, an aura of courage, pragmatic execution of necessary actions, take control-ability or anything else that is required in a Leader. We can note wisdom in children, mentally challenged individuals, castigated and rehabilitated malefactors, some say even in our pets, but not in grandiose cranks. Their neediness in requiring the SMART label for any ability to go forward in life is their sole drive. Newt is “surging” in S.Carolina, Andrea Mitchell just headlined in touting her upcoming show. So who follows a self-agrandizing crank? The only people who possibly can: the inherently inferior, both in intelligence and moral fiber. Newt is about to grab a momentary victory: King of the Inferior. All Hail! Those who berate the “Elite” should have no problem labeling themselves “The Inferior.” Inferior Pride would be a great label if only it didn’t sound so “Liberal.” Maybe Inferior Kicks-Ass would work. Sounds Inferior to me.
